Mt. Ontake Hiking Guide: Alert Level 1, the 2026 Summit Access Season (Ended October 14), Ontake Ropeway and Official Grading

Mt. Ontake (Kengamine, 3,067 m) is at volcanic alert level 1. In 2026, the seasonal relaxation allowing hikers to reach Kengamine from Kurosawaguchi and Ōtakiguchi ended at noon on October 14. Official Nagano grading (3/B, 4.5 h from the ropeway top station), Ontake Ropeway dates and fares, and compulsory climbing plans.

This guide is based on information from the Japan Meteorological Agency, Kiso Town, Ōtaki Village, the Kiso Ontake Tourism Office, Ontake Ropeway and Nagano Prefecture, checked October 24, 2026. The 2026 relaxation allowing access to the Kengamine summit ended at noon on Wednesday, October 14, 2026, so Kengamine cannot currently be climbed from either Kurosawaguchi or Ōtakiguchi.

Mt. Ontake (3,067 m at Kengamine) straddles Nagano and Gifu prefectures and is one of Japan's 100 Famous Mountains and a long-standing mountain of faith. Its eruption on September 27, 2014 claimed many lives, and the volcano is monitored around the clock.

The Japan Meteorological Agency's volcanic alert level is level 1 (potential for increased activity), lowered from level 2 on May 20, 2025. JMA still warns of sudden emissions of volcanic ash in the Jigokudani crater and asks hikers to follow local access restrictions and carry a helmet.

2026 summit access season and current restrictions

  • End of the 2026 summit season: the seasonal relaxation of entry restrictions ended at noon on Wednesday, October 14, 2026 (Kiso Ontake Tourism Office). Neither the Kurosawaguchi route (Kiso Town) nor the Ōtakiguchi route (Ōtaki Village) now allows access to the Kengamine summit.
  • Kurosawaguchi (Kiso Town): in 2026, the section from Kurosawa Junction (Kurosawa Jūjiro) to Kengamine was open from 8:00 on July 1 until noon on October 14, and is now closed again.
  • Ōtakiguchi (Ōtaki Village): as of October 15, 2026, climbing is not permitted from the Ōtakiguchi trailhead under the Basic Act on Disaster Management. Only the short walk to the Tanohara worship site (Yōhaijo) is open until November 4; from November 5 entry is restricted at the Tanohara car park.
  • Sections kept closed throughout 2026: the trails from the 9th station toward Okunoin, from Ōtaki Summit toward Okunoin, and the crater rim circuit (Ohachi-meguri).

Compulsory climbing plan

Under the Nagano Prefecture ordinance on mountain safety, anyone using a designated trail on Mt. Ontake (Kurosawa, Ōtaki or Kaida trailheads) must submit a climbing plan, online or at a trailhead box.

Check volcanic activity before you set off

Check JMA's volcanic activity page for Mt. Ontake (Japanese) the night before and the morning of your hike.

Official Nagano grading

Nagano Prefecture's mountain grading list (updated April 2026) gives the following figures for the Kengamine summit routes (applicable during the summer–autumn open period):

Iimori-Kōgen Station (ropeway top station) round trip 3 B 4 h 30 min (4.5 h) 7.7 km 0.95 km
Tanohara round trip 3 B 5 h 00 min (5.0 h) 7.2 km 0.93 km

Times exclude breaks.

Ontake Ropeway (Kurosawaguchi)

Ontake Ropeway runs from Kanose Station (5th station, 1,570 m) to Iimori-Kōgen Station (7th station, 2,150 m), covering 2,330 m and 580 m of elevation in about 15 minutes each way. The gondolas circulate continuously, so there is no fixed timetable during operating hours.

  • 2026 season: scheduled for Saturday, April 25 to Sunday, November 8, 2026.
  • Fares: round trip 2,600 yen (adult) / 1,300 yen (child); one way 1,400 yen (adult) / 700 yen (child).
  • Thunder, wind or rain can suspend operation, sometimes for several hours. Check operating hours on the day.
