Mt. Nikkō-Shirane Hiking Guide (2026): Kanto's Highest Peak via the Marunuma Kōgen Ropeway or Sugenuma
Mt. Nikkō-Shirane (2,578 m) is the highest peak in Kanto. Gunma Prefecture's grading for the Marunuma Kōgen ropeway loop and the Sugenuma route, the 2026 ropeway season, hours and fares, Goshikinuma pond, access, and volcano information from official sources.
Based on the Marunuma Kōgen official site, Gunma Prefecture's mountain grading, and the Japan Meteorological Agency, checked October 24, 2026. The ropeway is scheduled to run until November 8, 2026, and may change with the weather. Check the latest information before you go.
Introduction
Mt. Nikkō-Shirane (2,578 m) sits on the border of Gunma and Tochigi. It is the highest mountain in the Kanto region and in the Nikkō volcano group. With the Marunuma Kōgen ropeway you can start walking from the top station at about 2,000 m, which makes it a popular day hike for a peak over 2,500 m.
Key Facts
| Elevation | 2,578 m |
| Location | Katashina, Gunma / Nikko, Tochigi |
| Difficulty (Gunma grading) | Marunuma: fitness 2, technical B / Sugenuma: fitness 3, technical B |
| Course time | Marunuma (top station) loop about 5.0 h / Sugenuma out and back about 5.2 h |
| Main trailheads | Marunuma Kōgen (ropeway top station), Sugenuma |
| Volcanic alert level | Level 1 ("be aware that this is an active volcano") (JMA) |
Gunma rates fitness from 1 to 10 and technical difficulty from A to E. Grade B means the route has streams, cliffs, or steep climbs and descents where a fall could lead to a slip down the slope; hiking experience is needed and map reading is desirable. Even with the ropeway, the summit area is not a beginner's stroll.

Routes
Marunuma Kōgen (ropeway top station)
In Gunma's grading, the Nikkō-Shirane (Marunuma Kōgen) loop from the top station (1,995 m) takes about 5.0 hours, 7.6 km, with about 0.7 km of ascent and descent; fitness 2, technical B. You climb through forest from the top station, then above the tree line into the rocky summit area.
Near the summit there is rock and loose scree, slippery after rain or frost. Even with a light pack, mid-cut or higher hiking boots and gloves are reassuring.
Sugenuma
In Gunma's grading, the out-and-back route from Sugenuma (1,736 m) takes about 5.2 hours, 12.5 km, with about 1.3 km of ascent and descent; fitness 3, technical B. The trailhead is lower than the ropeway, so you walk farther.
We could not confirm the capacity or fee of the Sugenuma trailhead parking on official sites. At busy times, arrive early and follow local rules.
From Yumoto Onsen
This article does not cover the routes from the Yumoto Onsen side, because we could not confirm their course times or restrictions on official sites. Check the latest information from Tochigi Prefecture, Nikko City, and Nikkō Yumoto.
Highlights
Goshikinuma
A crater lake below the summit, with water from emerald green to cobalt blue. The view down from the ridge is the classic image of Nikkō-Shirane.
The summit view
On a clear day the summit looks out over the surrounding mountains and lakes. From winter to spring there is a lot of snow, a harsh environment for regular hikers.
Access
Public transport
According to Marunuma Kōgen, take a Kan-Etsu Kōtsū bus from JR Numata Station or Jōmō-Kōgen Station (Jōetsu Shinkansen) to the Kamata stop, and change to a bus bound for Yumoto Onsen; get off at "Nikkō Shirane-san Ropeway" (Marunuma Kōgen). The bus between Kamata and Nikkō Yumoto Onsen runs only on weekends and holidays. On weekdays public transport is limited, and Marunuma says you will generally need a taxi (reservation required) from the nearest bus stop. Check timetables on Kan-Etsu Kōtsū's official site.
By car
Marunuma Kōgen is about 50 minutes from Numata IC on the Kan-Etsu Expressway and about 60 minutes from Kiyotaki IC on the Nikkō-Utsunomiya Road (Marunuma Kōgen). National Route 120 in front of Marunuma Kōgen may close when continuous rainfall at the gauge reaches 120 mm.
Cautions
It is a volcano
JMA's current forecast for Mt. Nikkō-Shirane is volcanic alert Level 1 ("be aware that this is an active volcano"). It is still an active volcano, so check the latest volcano information.
Weather and clothing
The summit area is over 2,500 m and cold even in summer. Start early to avoid afternoon thunderstorms, and leave plenty of time to catch the last ropeway car. In late autumn, be ready for frost and snow.
Climbing plan
Gunma Prefecture asks hikers to submit a climbing plan. Submit one before you set out.
Food and water
There are cafés and restaurants around the ropeway top station, but hours can change. Bring water and snacks with you.
Summary
Mt. Nikkō-Shirane is an easy day trip with the Marunuma Kōgen ropeway, but Gunma's grading rates it technical B (hiking experience needed). Check the ropeway's operating days, hours, last car down, and the weather, and bring gear suited to rocky ground.
