Mt. Shirouma (Mt. Hakuba) Hiking Guide (2026): Tsugaike, Sarukura (Daisekkei & Yari Onsen) & Renge Onsen Routes, Huts, and Sarukura Parking Closure

Complete 2026 guide to climbing Mt. Shirouma (Mt. Hakuba, 2,932 m), the highest peak of the Ushiro-Tateyama Range in the Northern Japan Alps. Covers official Nagano/10-prefecture route grading, the year-round closure of Sarukura Municipal Parking Lot, Hakuba Daisekkei snow gorge hazards, Renge Onsen and Keyakidaira access, and 2026 mountain hut dates and fares.

Rising to 2,932 meters along the border of Nagano and Toyama prefectures (with its northern flank extending toward Niigata), Mt. Shirouma (白馬岳, Shiroumadake, also widely known in English after its village name as Mt. Hakuba) is the highest peak of the Ushiro-Tateyama Range (後立山連峰) in the northern part of the Northern Japan Alps and one of the 100 Famous Japanese Mountains (Hyakumeizan). Together with Mt. Shakushi (杓子岳, 2,812 m) and Mt. Shirouma-Yari (白馬鑓ヶ岳, 2,903 m), it forms the Three Peaks of Hakuba (白馬三山, Hakuba Sanzan).

The mountain is famous for the Hakuba Daisekkei (白馬大雪渓), one of Japan's three great perennial snow gorges (日本三大雪渓), as well as expansive alpine flower meadows (お花畑), an asymmetric glacial ridge morphology (非対称山稜) with gentle alpine slopes on the Toyama side and sheer cliffs dropping toward Hakuba Basin on the Nagano side, and Hakuba Sanso (白馬山荘), Japan's largest mountain hut (capacity 800 guests) just below the summit.

Because the mountain has seen fatal rockfall and crevasse accidents on the Daisekkei in late summer, and because the Sarukura Municipal Parking Lot (村営猿倉駐車場) is closed year-round for erosion-control construction in 2026, checking current access rules and route conditions before you plan your trip is essential.

Essential 2026 Access, Road & Trail Warnings

1. Sarukura Municipal Parking Lot Is Closed Year-Round in 2026 (村営猿倉駐車場は終日閉鎖)

According to Hakuba Village's official notice on the Sarukura Parking Lot closure (updated April 24, 2026), Nagano Prefecture's Matsumoto Sabo Office (長野県松本砂防事務所) is using the Sarukura Municipal Parking Lot (村営猿倉駐車場) as a construction yard for erosion-control works (砂防工事) year-round (通年・終日閉鎖).

  • Private cars cannot park at Sarukura: Only buses, taxis, and emergency vehicles may enter the turnaround area at Sarukura. On-street parking along Prefectural Route 322 (Hakubadake Line) is strictly prohibited.
  • How to reach Sarukura: Park at the free Happo Parking Lot No. 3 or No. 5 (八方第3駐車場・八方第5駐車場) near the Happo Information Center (八方インフォメーションセンター) or arrive at JR Hakuba Station (白馬駅), then take the Alpico Kotsu Sarukura Line Bus (アルピコ交通 猿倉線バス) or a taxi to Sarukura (猿倉).
  • Winter road closure lift date for 2026: According to the Nagano Prefecture Omachi Construction Office press release (April 16, 2026), the winter gate on Prefectural Route 322 (Hakubadake Line, a 4.0 km section in Hokujo, Hakuba Village) opened at 12:00 noon on Friday, April 24, 2026—for buses and taxis only, as the Sarukura parking lot itself remains closed to private cars.

2. Late-Summer Crevasse & Rockfall Closures on the Hakuba Daisekkei (白馬大雪渓)

As documented on the Hakuba Village Tourism Official Mountaineering Information page, the snowpack on the Hakuba Daisekkei has melted unusually fast in recent summers:

  • In 2024, large crevasses and collapsing snow bridges forced the Daisekkei route to close completely from August 21 onward.
  • In 2025, an interactive alternative trail (白馬尻〜葱平の迂回路, Shirajiri to Nebukabira bypass trail) was established when late-season snow bridges became unsafe, with ropes and ladders removed in mid-October.
  • In 2026: Even during July and August, rockfall from the melting walls above the snow gorge is a constant hazard (helmets and crampons are mandatory). From mid-August onward, always check Hakuba Village's official trail status updates and Hakuba Sanso's announcements before choosing the Daisekkei route; if the snow gorge is closed or unstable, climb via Tsugaike Nature Park (栂池自然園) or Renge Onsen (蓮華温泉) instead.

3. Shimizudani Route (清水谷ルート) to Keyakidaira Remains Impassable

On the Toyama side, the Shimizudani Route (祖母谷温泉〜不帰岳避難小屋〜白馬岳) linking Babadani Onsen / Keyakidaira to Mt. Shirouma is completely impassable due to severe trail collapse (登山道崩壊により通行不能), and Keyakidaira (欅平) cannot be reached from Mt. Shirouma. In addition, the Toyama Prefecture Prefectural Route Babadani–Karamatsudake Line (Unazuki–Babadani section) remains closed following slope damage from the 2024 Noto Peninsula Earthquake, and the Kurobe Gorge Railway (黒部峡谷鉄道) is still operating turnaround service only as far as Nekomata Station (猫又駅) in the 2026 season.

Official Route Grading & Comparison of the 4 Main Routes

All metrics below are taken directly from the Nagano Prefecture Mountain Grading Matrix (updated March 2026), the 10-Prefecture Hyakumeizan Grading Route List, and the Hakuba Village Official Model Courses:

(Note: Continuing south from Mt. Shirouma-Yari over the jagged Kaerazu-no-Ken (不帰ノ嶮) cliff face toward Mt. Karamatsu is graded Fitness 7 / Technical Grade D and is strictly for experienced scramblers with helmet and three-point contact skills.)

Route-by-Route Guide

Route 1: Tsugaike Nature Park – Lake Hakuba-Oike – Mt. Shirouma (栂池パノラマコース)

For first-time visitors to Mt. Shirouma—or anyone hiking from late August to October when the Daisekkei snow gorge thins out—the Tsugaike Panorama Course (栂池パノラマコース) is the safest and most scenic choice.

  1. Tsugaike Kogen (栂池高原) to Tsugaike Nature Park (栂池自然園, 1,829 m): Ride the Tsugaike Gondola Lift "Eve" (20 min) and Tsugaike Ropeway (5 min) up to 1,829 m.
  2. Tsugaike Nature Park to Lake Hakuba-Oike (白馬大池, 2,379 m) — ~3h 30m: Climb through silver-fir forest to the boardwalks of Tenguppara (天狗原, 2,200 m), scramble up a snow-patch and boulder slope onto the wide summit of Mt. Hakuba-Norikura (白馬乗鞍岳, 2,469 m), and drop gently to the cobalt basin of Lake Hakuba-Oike (白馬大池) and Hakuba-Oike Sanso (白馬大池山荘).
  3. Lake Hakuba-Oike to Mt. Shirouma (白馬岳, 2,932 m) — ~3h 30m: Follow the open alpine ridge called the "walk above the clouds" (雲上の散歩道) over Funakoshi-no-Atama (船越ノ頭, 2,612 m) and Mt. Korenge (小蓮華山, 2,766 m, Niigata Prefecture's highest point), passing Mikunizakai (三国境, the tri-border point of Nagano, Toyama, and Niigata) before reaching the summit of Mt. Shirouma and descending 15 minutes to Hakuba Sanso (白馬山荘) or Shiroumadake Chojo Shukusha (白馬岳頂上宿舎).

Route 2: Sarukura – Hakuba Daisekkei (白馬大雪渓コース)

The signature route up Japan's largest perennial snow gorge:

  1. Sarukura (猿倉, 1,250 m) to Shirajiri (白馬尻, 1,560 m) — ~1h 10m: Walk up a gentle gravel service track from Sarukura past Sarukuraso (猿倉荘) to the foot of the snow gorge at Shirajiri.
  2. Climbing the Hakuba Daisekkei (白馬大雪渓) to Nebukabira (葱平) — ~2h 00m–2h 30m: Put on crampons (アイゼン, 6-point or 10/12-point; thin chain spikes slip in heavy slush snow) and a climbing helmet (ヘルメット) before stepping onto the snow. Follow the red paint guidance line (ベンガラ) strictly—never wander off the marked line, where snow bridges over the meltwater torrent are thin—and keep watching and listening uphill for falling rocks (落石).
  3. Nebukabira (葱平) to Mt. Shirouma (白馬岳, 2,932 m) — ~2h 30m: Leave the snow at the upper gorge, climb through the famous alpine flower gardens (お花畑) past the site of the old refuge hut, and ascend past Shiroumadake Chojo Shukusha (白馬岳頂上宿舎, 2,730 m) and Hakuba Sanso (白馬山荘, 2,832 m) to the 2,932 m summit.

Route 3: Renge Onsen – Lake Hakuba-Oike – Mt. Shirouma (蓮華温泉コース)

Starting at Renge Onsen (蓮華温泉, 1,475 m) in Itoigawa City, Niigata Prefecture, this route avoids the Daisekkei snow gorge entirely, climbing through beech and cedar forest past the marshland of Heibira (兵馬ノ平) to join the ridge at Lake Hakuba-Oike (白馬大池). And at the end of your hike, you can soak in Renge Onsen's famous open-air mountain hot spring baths (仙気の湯, 薬師の湯, etc.).
