Mt. Nishiazuma Hiking Report: Ropeway and 3 Chairlifts from Tengendai Kogen to Hokubodai, Past Bonten-iwa and Tengu-iwa to the 2,035 m Summit
An August 8, 2026 solo day-hike report on Mt. Nishiazuma (2,035 m), one of Japan's 100 Famous Mountains on the Yamagata–Fukushima border. Using the Tengendai Kogen Ropeway and three summer chairlifts to reach Hokubodai (1,820 m), I walked 6.0 km round trip in 2 hours 44 minutes.
On August 8, 2026, I climbed Mt. Nishiazuma (西吾妻山, 2,035 m) on the border of Yamagata and Fukushima Prefectures.
Because I wanted to check off another peak on the 100 Famous Japanese Mountains (Nihon Hyakumeizan) list, I drove solo to Tengendai Kogen (天元台高原) in Yonezawa City. By riding the Tengendai Ropeway and three summer chairlifts from Shirabu Onsen Yumoto Station (~920 m) up to Hokubodai (北望台, 1,820 m), I gained roughly 900 meters of elevation mechanically and walked the remaining 6.0 km round trip to the summit and back in 2 hours 44 minutes (11:51 to 14:35).
To be completely honest, the forested summit itself had almost no view, so it wasn't the most dramatic climb I have ever done. However, the boardwalks across the alpine marshes before Daikubo Water Source were genuinely pleasant to walk, and the massive boulders around Bonten-iwa and Tengu-iwa gave the upper ridge real character. If you want an approachable way to bag a 2,000-meter Hyakumeizan peak in Tohoku, this is one of the easiest routes to plan.
Information checked October 24, 2026 against official notices from Tengendai Kogen, Yonezawa Kanko Navi, Yamagata Prefecture ("Yamagata-yama"), and the Japan Meteorological Agency. Note that in 2026 the Tengendai Kogen summer chairlifts operate through Sunday, October 25 (with the ropeway suspended for inspection October 26–November 6). Always check current lift operations and JMA volcanic advisories for the Azuma mountain range before setting out.

Trail Report: From Yumoto Station to Mt. Nishiazuma and Back
1. Yumoto Station to Hokubodai: Ropeway & Three Summer Chairlifts (11:02–11:51)
I parked at the free parking lot around Yumoto Station (湯元駅) in Shirabu Onsen (approx. 300 spaces) and boarded the Tengendai Ropeway at 11:02 AM.
From Tengendai Kogen Station at the top of the ropeway, you transfer across three consecutive single-seat summer chairlifts—Sharakura (しゃくなげ/しらかば/しゃらくら lifts)—climbing steadily up the ski slopes to Hokubodai (北望台) at 1,820 meters.
By the time I stepped off the third lift at Hokubodai at 11:51 AM, the mechanical lifts had already carried me from ~920 m to 1,820 m—leaving only about 215 meters of net elevation difference to the 2,035 m summit.
2. Hokubodai to Kamoshika Viewpoint & Daikubo Marsh (11:51–12:24)
From Hokubodai, the trail enters subalpine conifer forest and climbs over rough stones and tree roots for 21 minutes to Kamoshika Viewpoint (かもしか展望台, approx. 1,940 m) (12:12).
Just past Kamoshika Viewpoint, the trees suddenly open up and the trail drops slightly onto wooden boardwalks winding across a high-altitude marsh dotted with alpine ponds (chito). This open wetland section down to Daikubo Water Source (大凹の水場) (12:24) was the easiest and most scenic part of the walk.
3. Daikubo Water Source to Bonten-iwa and Mt. Nishiazuma Summit (12:24–13:02)
From Daikubo Water Source (approx. 1,875 m), the longest continuous climb of the day begins—ascending about 130 vertical meters over 26 minutes up a pitched path of large granite boulders to Bonten-iwa (梵天岩, 2,005 m) (12:50).
Unlike the enclosed summit ahead, the boulder pile at Bonten-iwa opens up wide views across the Azuma ridge. From Bonten-iwa, a gentler boardwalk and forest path leads in 12 minutes to the Mt. Nishiazuma Summit (西吾妻山, 2,035 m) (13:02).
As Urabandai Visitor Center's trail guide also notes, the 2,035 m summit is completely surrounded by trees in summer and offers no panoramic view.
4. Loop Past Nishiazuma Hut & Tengu-iwa, and Return to Hokubodai (13:02–14:35)
Rather than turning around immediately at the summit post, I continued 11 minutes down the far side to Nishiazuma Emergency Hut (西吾妻避難小屋 / 西吾妻小屋) (13:13) and then climbed 9 minutes up to Tengu-iwa (天狗岩) (13:22), where the stone shrine of Azuma Shrine (吾妻神社) sits atop another wide rock outcrop.
From Tengu-iwa, I retraced my steps past Bonten-iwa (13:34), Daikubo Water Source (13:55), and Kamoshika Viewpoint (14:07), arriving back at Hokubodai lift station at 14:35—with plenty of margin before the 15:40 final downward chairlift.
