Historically walked by Dewa Sanzan ascetic pilgrims and designated part of the Tohoku Nature Trail, the 8th Station route climbs approx. 4.9 km in about 3 hours one-way:

  • Gassan 8th Station Parking Lot / Rest House (八合目駐車場/レストハウス): Views over the Shonai Plain on clear days. (Note: Road closed at the 4th Station gate from October 19, 2026 at 15:00.)

5. Access & Safety Notes

Access Summary

  • To Ubasawa (Nishikawa Town):
    • By Car: About 20 minutes from Gassan IC or 40 minutes from Sagae IC on the Yamagata Expressway (月山スキー場 official access guide).
    • By Bus: Highway bus from Yamagata Station or Sendai Station to Nishikawa Bus Stop → walk to Nishikawa IC → Nishikawa Town municipal bus to Ubasawa (check seasonal bus schedules on the Nishikawa Town website).
  • To Gassan 8th Station (Tsuruoka City):
    • By Car: Via Prefectural Route 211 (Gassan Park Line) until winter closure (closed at the 4th Station gate from October 19, 2026 at 15:00).
    • By Bus / Taxi: Shonai Kotsu seasonal buses to the 8th Station ended on September 27, 2026. For Mt. Yudono connections, the reservation-only Tsuruoka Kanko Liner shared taxi operates through November 3, 2026.

Late-Autumn Safety Precautions

  • Highest-Risk Window Before Road Closure: Gassan Visitor Center warns that the period in October after mountain huts and lifts close—before access roads close for winter—requires the greatest caution of the year, as no staff remain on the upper mountain to assist in emergencies.
  • Essential Gear: Full waterproof rainwear (jacket and pants), warm mid-layers, gloves, knit hat, headlamp, offline maps, backup battery, warm drinks, and a bear bell (クマ鈴) (Asiatic black bears inhabit the area).
