Mt. Adatara Hiking Guide: Okudake Ropeway, Kurogane Hut Closure, Numanodaira Crater & 7 Trailheads
An official-source hiking guide to Mt. Adatara (1,700 m) in Fukushima Prefecture: the Adatara Mountain Ropeway from Okudake, one-way times from all seven trailheads, the Kurogane Hut reconstruction closure through late November 2028, Numanodaira crater volcanic gas hazards, parking, and seasonal buses.
This guide is compiled from official information published by Kurogane Hut (Fukushima Tourism & Local Products Association), Adatara Kogen Resort, the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA), Fukushima Prefecture, Fukushima Transportation, and the Dake Onsen Tourism Association (checked October 24, 2026).
Mt. Adatara is the main peak of the Adatara range straddling Nihonmatsu City, Fukushima City, and Inawashiro Town in Fukushima Prefecture, and is one of Japan's 100 Famous Mountains. Fukushima Prefecture's volcano preparedness guide lists the summit elevation as 1,699.7 m, while the official Kurogane Hut climbing guide lists it as approximately 1,700 m. The highest point in the range is Mt. Minowa (1,728 m), and nearby Mt. Tetsu stands at 1,709.4 m.
Celebrated in Kōtarō Takamura's poetry collection Chieko-shō for the "true sky" above its slopes and also selected among the 100 Famous Flower Mountains, Mt. Adatara has seven trailheads. The most popular starting point is the Okudake Trailhead (Adatara Kogen) in Nihonmatsu City, where the Adatara Mountain Ropeway carries hikers directly to the eighth-station area near Mt. Yakushi (approx. 1,350 m).
Key Takeaways
- Okudake + Ropeway for first-time visitors: According to the official Kurogane Hut climbing guide, the Yakushidake Course using the ropeway takes approximately 1 hour 25 minutes one way to the summit and is rated for beginners.
- Kurogane Hut is closed for reconstruction: Due to Fukushima Prefecture's rebuilding project (scheduled for completion around late November 2028, as of the January 2026 announcement), entry to the building and grounds is prohibited, and neither rest areas nor toilets can be used.
- Numanodaira Crater (Numajiri Course) has volcanic gas hazards: The crater rim offers dramatic volcanic scenery, but pockets of toxic volcanic gas exist—never enter restricted areas or closed trails.
- Driving is the most practical access: Adatara Kogen Resort has parking for approximately 1,000 cars (Lot 1 costs 1,000 yen on weekends and holidays in October and on November 1; overnight parking is prohibited). Public buses from Nihonmatsu Station are limited.

Precautions on the Yakushidake Course
Even when using the ropeway, the official Kurogane Hut guide emphasizes that proper mountain clothing, hiking boots, and full hiking gear are required if you continue beyond Yakushidake toward the summit. Climbing in casual shoes or light clothing is dangerous. The trail includes slippery sections, and carrying a bear bell or radio for bear safety is mandatory.
Kurogane Hut Is Closed for Reconstruction
Kurogane Hut, which opened in 1963 below the summit along the Seishidaira route, closed in 2023 due to aging facilities and is currently being rebuilt by Fukushima Prefecture. According to the official Kurogane Hut website (as of January 2026):
- Entry to the building and construction site is prohibited.
- Rest areas and toilets cannot be used.
- Satellite phone inquiries to the hut are suspended.
- Construction is scheduled for completion around late November 2028.
Hikers taking the Seishidaira Course pass near the hut site, but no shelter, water, or toilet facilities are available there. Plan your water supply and toilet stops before leaving the trailhead. For inquiries regarding reconstruction and reopening, contact the Fukushima Prefecture Tourism Exchange Division (Tel: 024-521-7286, weekdays 8:30 AM – 5:00 PM).

Numajiri Course & Numanodaira Crater
Starting on the Inawashiro Town side near Numajiri Ski Resort, the Numajiri Course passes the hot spring source area for Numajiri Onsen and Nakanosawa Onsen and climbs along the crater rim of Numanodaira to the summit in approximately 3 hours 55 minutes one way.
According to the Kurogane Hut guide, Numanodaira is an explosion crater measuring approximately 1.2 km in diameter and 150 m in depth. An observation deck for Shiraito Falls lies about a five-minute walk from the trailhead, and the route passes rocky features such as Shōji-iwa and Tainai-iwa.
Critical safety rules on the Numajiri route:
- Toxic volcanic gas is emitted in parts of Numanodaira. Never enter restricted zones or abandoned trails down into the crater floor.
- Stay back from cliff edges along the rocky crater rim.
- Check the JMA volcanic alert status and municipal trail notices before departure.
Active Volcano Preparedness & Alert Level
Mt. Adatara is an active volcano continuously monitored by the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA). As of October 24, 2026, a Volcanic Forecast (Alert Level 1: Be mindful that this is an active volcano) is in effect.
JMA warns that fumaroles and volcanic gas emissions occur inside craters, where entering poses a life-threatening hazard. Fukushima Prefecture advises hikers to check evacuation maps and carry volcano preparedness gear even at Alert Level 1, as sudden phreatic eruptions can occur on active volcanoes.
Before setting out, verify:

Recommended Gear
Adatara Kogen Resort and Kurogane Hut recommend synthetic base layers, fleece/insulation, sturdy hiking boots, rainwear, a headlamp, extra food and water, a first-aid kit, a radio or bear bell, and a portable toilet kit (especially important while Kurogane Hut is closed). Above treeline on the summit ridge, strong winds can rapidly lower body temperature; review Hiking Layering Basics and Why Bright Colors Matter for Hiking Clothing in Japan before heading out.
